The Depth of the Matter
When I talk to patients at The Skin Lab BD about chemical peeling, the first thing I do is clarify a misconception. Many people believe a peel is just a single type of treatment. In reality, a chemical peel is a clinical intervention that requires a doctor to make a choice: How deep do we need to go?
I view the skin like a manuscript. Sometimes, we only need to correct a few typos on the surface. Other times, the damage goes deeper, and we need to work on the underlying structure. If we use a deep peel on a superficial problem, we cause unnecessary damage. If we use a light peel on a deep scar, we waste your time and money. That is why the "best" peel is the one that is precisely calibrated to your specific skin needs.
The Three Levels of Clinical Peeling
1. Superficial Peels (The "Refresh")
These are what I often recommend for patients dealing with acne-prone skin, dullness, or minor texture irregularities. We use gentle acids like Salicylic or Glycolic to remove the buildup of dead skin cells on the surface. There is virtually no downtime. It provides that "fresh-faced" glow that many patients want before an event. It is maintenance, not a major overhaul.
2. Medium-Depth Peels (The "Correction")
This is where we address the more stubborn concerns, such as sun damage, uneven pigmentation, or melasma. A medium peel penetrates the top and middle layers of the skin. Because we are going deeper, the recovery time is slightly longer, and you can expect some light peeling. This is a powerful, calculated step that helps reset your skin's texture.
3. Deep Peels (The "Reconstruction")
These are reserved for significant concerns, such as deep acne scars or severe wrinkles. This is a complex medical procedure that requires significant pre- and post-care. Because of the intensity, I do not perform these for everyone. We only pursue deep peels when the clinical benefit clearly outweighs the recovery commitment.
Why Geography Matters
The climate in Khulna is a major factor in our post-peel protocols. Because we have high humidity and intense UV exposure, the "aftercare" is as important as the peel itself. I never perform a peel without a strict plan for sun protection. If a clinic offers you a peel without being obsessive about your sun protection plan, they are not prioritizing your long-term skin health.
